Backyard Sports Wiki

Abner Dubbleplay is the color commentator in Backyard Baseball for the GameCube, Backyard Baseball 2005, and Backyard Baseball 2006, replacing Vinnie the Gooch who was the long-standing color commentator in the Backyard Baseball series. He also appears as an unlockable playable character in Backyard Football 2006. His name is a pun on Civil War hero Abner Doubleday, who is popularly (but falsely) credited with the invention of baseball.

Personality[]

Abner's commentary is less sarcastic than his predecessor. He has a penchant for stating the obvious. He's also interested in conspiracy theories, as he is concerned about the threat of robots replacing baseball players, robots becoming the umpires, and then robots taking over the world. He also talks often about luck, especially in Backyard Football 2006, where he talks about how he should've been wearing 'both pairs of lucky socks'.

"From an early age, it was clear that this pint-sized slugger would be a force to be reckoned with on the diamond. When he wasn't smashing green peas to deep, dining-center, he could be found painting the black of his father's dress shoes with his nasty yacker (usually today's lunch). Called by many a genuine 'Natural' - not farm raised - this guy lives and breathes the game of baseball, and isn't shy about extolling for hours on the finer points of the suicide squeeze, or the hit and run. Don't be fooled though: this kid is more than just a student of the game who is all talk. He can swing the stick with the best of 'em, handles the leather like a Gold Glover, and he can pitch through the eye of a needle."

"While Abner is more at home on the pitcher's mound, he's certainly no slug on the gridiron. Just give him the ball and watch him turn his fastball into a perfect spiral."

Music[]

Abner's theme is very jazz-y and is similar to music from speakeasies from the 20's to 30's.

Abner also does sing a rendition of 'Take Me Out to the Ball Game' at the credits.

Trivia[]

  • A running gag throughout the game is Abner talking about how he has misplaced his nachos. His little info card when he's walking up to bat also says, 'Can't find his nachos.'
  • It's implied Abner is a middle schooler, due to a line where he thanks everyone who got him to this point, and he thanks the kids at Washington Middle School.
  • In Backyard Baseball 2005, Abner is unlockable by getting 20 certificates using one coach file for one singular character (ex. 20 certificates on Pablo in one coach file). This is also the same for the GBA version.
  • In the files of Backyard Football 2006, His last name is sometimes misspelt 'Doubleplay'.
  • Abner often talks about real Baseball history and facts. Usually when he's talking about teams that share the same name as an official MLB team.
  • In Backyard Baseball for the Gamecube, Abner has a cowlick on the back of his head which can be seen easier with freecamera software. The cowlick was omitted in Baseball 2005 and Football 2006.
  • In Backyard Baseball for the Gamecube, Abner originally didn't have his own theme. Instead, he used a randomized theme from either generic characters or pro characters.
